The fracture liaison service (FLS) of the Leiden Center for Bone Quality has been fully operational since June 2012 and serves more than 1400 patients >50 years with a fracture. The Hospital (LUMC) is an Academic Teaching Hospital in Leiden, the Netherlands. The Bone Group is currently directed by Dr Natasha Appelman-Dijkstra. All patients are identified and contacted/screened at the (outpatient) clinic by our FLS manager. If necessary the service consults with general practitioners or other local hospitals to arrange screening and/or treatment elsewhere.

The FLS at the University Hospital Waterford (UHW) is run on a part-time basis by a Rheumatology Consultant, working with a part-time Clinical Nurse Specialist who also carries out the DXA scans. Admitted cases also have part-time orthogeriatrican input, and a hip fracture care pathway is managed by a Clinical Nurse Specialist. UHW has over 1000 cases of the main fragility fractures (hip, pelvis, vertebra, humerus) admitted annually. The service is complex, interacting with four other hospitals in the region for orthopaedic referrals and for post-fracture care.

FLS Basel/ENDONET

Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) Basel offers pharmaceutical and operative therapy for osteologic disorders. It matches an “A-level FLS” where following a minimal trauma fracture, patients are identified, assessed and treated for osteoporosis as part of an all-encompassing service.

Directed by lead clinician Dr. Suzanne Lane, the Ipswich NHS Trust Fracture Liaison Service has been running since 2003. The public district hospital is located in Ipswich in the UK and serves a population of around 320,000 people. The fracture liaison service handles all fragility fractures and serves about 1050 patients per year.

Christchurch Hospitals located in Addington, New Zealand, is a public hospital system with a network of two hospitals serving more than 600,000 people. The fracture liaison service is in the orthopedic/geriatric medicine department and manages all fragility fractures (including hip, inpatient, outpatient and vertebral fractures). More than 1000 fracture patients are seen per year. The programme is led by Dr. John Geddes who specializes in geriatrics.

Counties Manukau Health has three hospital sites. Middlemore Hospital is the main hospital, with satellite sites being the Manukau Surgical Centre and Pukekohe Hospital.

Our FLS is Orthogeriatrician lead, and we have access to DEXA scans through our Bone Density Service as well as to Falls and Osteoporosis Clinic.

In August 2015, the International Osteoporosis Federation (IOF) judged that the Newcastle Hospitals Trust Fracture Liaison Service (FLS), had moved from BRONZE to a GOLD standard. We are the only FLS service currently recognised by the IOF in the North East of England and one of only four centres in the British Isles to have been credited with a GOLD standard. 

Nepean Hospital in Sydney, Australia is a public university teaching hospital with a surrounding population of 450,000 people. The Fracture Liaison Service is led by Professor Gustavo Duque and services all fragility fractures, handling around 850 patients per year.
