O serviço doenças osteometabólicas funciona dentro do Hospital  Universitário Pedro Ernesto (HUPE), que é um hospital público de perfil Universitário que recebe em torno de 12.500 pacientes. Esse serviço recebe todos os tipos de fraturas osteoporóticas: vertebrais, quadril, punho e antebraço. É responsável pelo diagnóstico, estratificação de risco, tratamento e acompanhamento dos pacientes com osteoporose. Além disso, fornecemos orientação quanto ao tratamento não farmacológico (cálcio e vitamina D) e durante as consultas os pacientes são avaliados em relação ao risco de queda.

Yeovil FLS is a nurse-led service that was first commissioned in 2012 with non-commissioned and non-systematic case finding for 10 years prior to this. It has been in the top 10 services for case for identification since the National Fracture Liaison Database (FLSDB) started in 2016. A Quality Improvement project in 2019 saw sustained improvements in time to assessment, DXA and follow up although, closure of the DXA service due to Covid-19 has affected time to DXA.

We are an education and research hospital and it makes us more powerfull about the approach of complicated patients. 

We have outpatient clinics in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Endocrinology and Geriatrics departments of our hospital, where we have been seeing and following osteoporosis patients for many years. Therefore, we have a large patient population and database. Among these patients, there are many patients with vertebral, hip, distal radius and proximal humerus fragility fractures and we are treating these patients together with the Orthopedics and Neurosurgery clinics.
