Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg General hospital

The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Endocrine Osteoporosis Clinic provides a coordinated, multidisciplinary Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) aimed at identifying, assessing, and managing patients with fragility fractures to prevent secondary fractures. Established within the Division of Endocrinology, the service reviews approximately 5-10 new cases per week and 15-20 follow-up cases per week, referred from orthopedic, medical, and outpatient departments.

All patients undergo comprehensive risk assessment including bone mineral density measurement, secondary osteoporosis screening, and individualized management planning. The clinic integrates endocrinologists, geriatrician, and nursing staff to ensure continuity of care from acute fracture management to long-term bone health optimization.

Treatment protocols align with international best practice, emphasizing evidence-based pharmacologic therapy, calcium and vitamin D optimization, lifestyle counseling, and fall prevention. The service also engages in patient education and training of healthcare professionals to promote early detection and secondary prevention across the hospital network.

Our goal is to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care that reduces re-fracture rates and improves functional outcomes in older adults, contributing to the advancement of fracture prevention and osteoporosis management in South Africa.
