University Hospital of University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli"
UOC di Medicina Fisica e Riabilitazione – Fracture Liaison Service (FLS)
AOU "Luigi Vanvitelli", Naples, Italy
The FLS of the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Unit at the AOU "Luigi Vanvitelli", directed by Prof. Giovanni Iolascon, provides a multidisciplinary, coordinator-based model of care for people with fragility fractures. The service aims to reduce the risk of subsequent fractures through systematic identification, comprehensive assessment, evidence-based secondary prevention, and individualized rehabilitation.
The FLS integrates physiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, primary care physicians, physiotherapists, nurses to ensure continuity of care from the acute phase to long-term follow-up. Patients undergo fracture risk assessment, osteoporosis evaluation (including DXA, REMS, and laboratory investigations when appropriate), falls risk assessment (including evaluation of body composition and osteosarcopenia), optimization of pharmacological therapy, nutritional counseling, and personalized exercise and rehabilitation programs.
A key strength of our service is the integration of secondary fracture prevention with rehabilitation, promoting functional recovery, mobility, adherence to treatment, and maintenance of independence, through a biopsychosocial approach and consequently an Individual Rehabilitation Project (IRP).
Our FLS is committed to implementing international best practices, contributing to research and education, and continuously improving the quality of fragility fracture care.
