Santo Borromeus Hospital: Pioneering Secondary Fracture Prevention in Indonesia

Santo Borromeus Hospital FLS team

Santo Borromeus Hospital, located in Bandung, West Java, is one of Indonesia’s leading not-for-profit healthcare institutions, renowned for its commitment to clinical excellence, patient-centred care, innovation, and continuous quality improvement. With a long-standing reputation as a referral centre providing comprehensive and multidisciplinary healthcare services, the hospital has consistently embraced international standards to enhance patient outcomes and safety.

Santo Borromeus Hospital, has become the first hospital in Indonesia to join the Capture the Fracture® network through the implementation of a Fracture Liaison Service (FLS).

The establishment of the FLS reflects the hospital’s commitment to addressing the growing burden of osteoporosis and fragility fractures in Indonesia. While the initial fracture often receives appropriate acute management, many patients remain at high risk of sustaining a second fracture because the underlying osteoporosis is not identified and treated. The FLS was developed to close this care gap and ensure that patients receive coordinated, comprehensive care following a fragility fracture.

The service brings together a multidisciplinary team including orthopaedic surgeons, radiologist, internists, rehabilitation specialists, nurses, and allied health professionals. Patients aged 50 years and older presenting with fragility fractures are systematically identified, assessed for osteoporosis and falls risk, initiated on appropriate treatment, and followed longitudinally to support adherence and reduce the risk of future fractures.

As the first Capture the Fracture® recognised FLS in Indonesia, Santo Borromeus Hospital aims not only to improve outcomes for its own patients but also to raise awareness of secondary fracture prevention nationwide. The programme represents an important milestone in advancing integrated osteoporosis care and promoting a proactive approach to preventing subsequent fractures.

Santo Borromeus Hospital FLS Team Leader Dr. Andre Yanuar stated: “A fragility fracture should never be considered an isolated event. It is an opportunity to identify patients at high risk and intervene before another fracture occurs. Through our Fracture Liaison Service, we are committed to delivering coordinated, patient-centred care that helps prevent second fractures and improves quality of life.”

By joining the global Capture the Fracture® network, Santo Borromeus Hospital hopes to contribute to the international effort to reduce the burden of osteoporotic fractures and inspire the development of Fracture Liaison Services across Indonesia.
