Istanbul FLS Centers meeting

Istanbul FLS Centers Meeting

On August 23rd, staff delegates from 12 Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) Centers gathered in Istanbul to share best practices and work together collectively to improve post-fracture care and secondary fracture prevention

This meeting, organized by Prof. Şansın Tüzün from the İstanbul University – Cerrahpaşa, Faculty of Medicine, had the objective of creating an interactive platform, to come together with centers that have already established FLS in İstanbul, but have questions and concerns about the process. Attendance was excellent, gathering staff delegates from 12 FLS Centers from different parts of Istanbul. The following FLS Centers were represented at the meeting:

  • IUC- Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty
  • İstanbul University, İstanbul Medical Faculty
  • Marmara University, Pendik Education and Research Hospital
  • İstanbul Education and Research Hospital
  • University of Health Sciences, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Education and Research Hospital
  • Çam and Sakura City Hospital
  • Sultan 2. Abdülhamid Han Education and Research Hospital
  • Şehit Professor İlhan Varank Sancaktepe Education and Research Hospital
  • Üsküdar State Hospital
  • Haydarpaşa Numune Education and Research Hospital
  • Göztepe Prof.Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital
  • Haydarpaşa Numune Education and Research Hospital

The meeting featured presentations by Şansın Tüzün titled “The Importance of Secondary Fracture Prevention for Turkey", and by Dilşad Sindel, titled “The Importance of Standard Patient Forms, and the sample of Istanbul University”, and by Ulku Akarırmak “The Importance of Key Performance Indicators in the management of FLS” followed by a Q&A session.

The most important result from the meeting was the requirement for FLS Centers to use a standard software program. In this way, it will be easier for FLS Centers to produce multicenter broadcasts, and academic publications. This meeting introduced the Lyosis® Fracture Management Software to the FLS in attendance. Lyosis® is a software developed in close collaboration with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) to optimize patient management in FLS, with features designed specifically for the patient workflow and tailored to the needs of each FLS.

Prof. Tüzün stated, “This meeting marks the first and largest gathering of FLS Centers in Istanbul to date. On behalf of İstanbul mentors, Prof. Ulku Akarırmak, Prof. Dr. Dilşad Sindel and myself, we tried to do our best in responding to so many queries from the FLSs around Istanbul.  We held this first face-to-face meeting with Istanbul FLS centers, which are the most numerous (12 out of 19 centres) in our country. From now on, we are planning to hold larger meetings with centers all over Turkey. Post-Fracture Care and Secondary Fracture Prevention are entering a new era in Turkey, exemplified by the increasing momentum and the common dedication among the FLS champions seen at this meeting. I thank all the participants for their outstanding work for the wellbeing of our patients, who  certainly are at the center of our combined efforts.”
