IOF and ABOOM promote secondary fracture prevention at XVII CBOOM 2025

Joint IOF-ABOOM Symposium at C-Boom Brazil

From May 8 to 10th, 2025, São Paulo hosted the XVII Brazilian Orthopedic Congress of Osteometabolism (CBOOM), organized by the Brazilian Association of Orthopedics and Osteometabolism (ABOOM). The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) actively participated in this event, reaffirming its commitment to national societies and bone health promotion in Latin America.

One of the highlights of the congress was the Joint IOF-ABOOM symposium "Secondary Fracture Prevention: Challenges and Opportunities in Latin America". Moderated by ABOOM President Dr. Francisco Paranhos, the symposium brought together international and regional experts to discuss innovative strategies in the management of osteoporosis and the prevention of fragility fractures.

Among the key speakers, Dr. Ben Hur Albergaria presented FRAX Brasil 2.0, a tool for calculating fracture risk, adapted to the national clinical context; Dr. Osvaldo Messina (Argentina) addressed innovative approaches for therapeutic scaling in osteoporosis, emphasizing the need to personalize treatments according to the characteristics and risks of each patient; and, Dr. Andrea Singer (Canada) shared international experiences around fracture registries and data collection in Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), demonstrating how these tools can optimize patient care and follow-up. Finally, Dr. Luiz Tikle VieiraCapture the Fracture FLS mentor in Brazil, presented the progress and achievements of FLS units in the country, underlining their positive impact on the prevention of secondary fractures and on the improvement of the quality of care.
