Venezuela Joins the Capture the Fracture® Best Practice Map with Its First FLS
The High-Complexity Trauma Unit at Centro Clínico Universitario La Sagrada Familia becomes the first Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) in Venezuela to join the Capture the Fracture® Best Practice Map.
A new country has joined the global movement for the prevention of secondary fractures. The High-Complexity Trauma Unit at Centro Clínico Universitario La Sagrada Familia in Maracaibo has been added to the Capture the Fracture® Best Practice Map, becoming the first FLS in Venezuela to join this international network.
This achievement represents an important step forward for secondary fracture prevention in the country. It also highlights the commitment of Venezuelan healthcare professionals to identify and provide appropriate treatment for people who have experienced a fragility fracture.
Dr. Paul Polanco, Coordinator of the High-Complexity Trauma Unit FLS, stated:
“Our primary motivation for establishing the first FLS in Venezuela arose from a clinical and social urgency: to close the gap in underdiagnosis and prevent a first fragility fracture from determining a patient’s future. We knew we needed to transform our response-focused approach into a preventive, systematic, multidisciplinary model.
Being part of the Capture the Fracture® program’s Best Practice Map represents both institutional pride and an enormous responsibility. It validates the efforts of a team committed to the highest international standards and demonstrates that, even in challenging environments, it is possible to innovate and build sustainable healthcare solutions that save lives and restore quality of life for our patients.”
With this new integration, the Capture the Fracture® network now includes 1,364 FLSs in 66 countries, strengthening an international community of professionals and centres committed to transforming care for people who suffer fragility fractures.

What is an FLS and how can you become part of Capture the Fracture®?
FLSs are coordinated models of care designed to identify people who have experienced a fragility fracture and ensure that they receive the appropriate assessment and, when applicable, treatment and follow-up to reduce the risk of new fractures. Through Capture the Fracture®, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) promotes the implementation of these services and recognizes those that meet quality standards and best practices in secondary fracture prevention.
