Target Group:
Elderly patients with fragility fractures, primarily hip fractures related to osteoporosis.
Scope of Service:
The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) at Hospital Tawau was established to enhance the identification, management, and secondary prevention of fragility fractures. Within the first year, the service has managed 25 geriatric hip fracture patients who underwent surgical interventions including Proximal Femur Nailing (PFN), Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS) fixation, and Hemiarthroplasty.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
The FLS operates through close collaboration between the Orthopaedic, Emergency, Internal Medicine, Anaesthesia, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, and Radiology Departments, providing coordinated, patient-centered care from admission to rehabilitation.
Key Activities:
- Comprehensive inpatient and post-discharge management
- Osteoporosis evaluation and medical optimization
- Rehabilitation and physiotherapy support
- Nutrition counselling and fall prevention education
Vision:
To expand the service to benefit more patients in the future, reduce secondary fractures, and improve the quality of life and functional outcomes of elderly patients in the East Malaysian region.
