Kwong Wah Hospital

Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) is one of the regional district-general hospitals of Kowloon central district in Hong Kong, the most common osteoporotic fractures admitted to our in-patient services are vertebral fracture and geriatric hip fracture.

Patients with osteoporotic fractures of two vertebrae or geriatric hip fracture in addition to one fragility fracture are included into our programme.  They are assessed by geriatricians to see whether they are indicated for anti-osteoporosis  therapy  in our Fracture liaison service (FLS).  Patient’s information is then entered into the virtual ortho-geriatric ward system at the Hospital Authority (HA) intranet for data access.

The FLS with anti-osteoporotic injection programme is initiated in O&T ward or Ambulatory Orthopaedic Service (AOS) Centre. Designated follow-up sessions in our FLS are arranged under coordination by Fracture liaison nurses (FLN) in AOS Centre.

FLN in AOS provides quality bone health and secondary fall prevention education as well as to facilitate health behavioral modification to prevent secondary fracture in vulnerable cases. Moreover, the FLN coordinates and collaborates multidisciplinary team including geriatrician, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dietitians throughout institutional boundaries to achieve the scope of FLS.
