Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust - Addenbrookes Hospital

Dr Madhavi Vindlacheruvu, a specialist in orthogeriatrics, is Clinical Lead for the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH), a public university teaching hospital serving over 600,000 people. The FLS identifies and treats inpatient and outpatient hip and non-hip fragility fractures, including vertebral fractures, seeing approximately 2,650 patients annually.

The CUH FLS has been recognised for its strong performance, clinical ambition and national leadership. In 2024, it identified 101% of its estimated local fracture caseload, exceeding the 80% benchmark and demonstrating an effective approach to secondary fracture prevention.

The 2026 GIRFT review described the service as “commendable”, highlighting its structured multidisciplinary model, weekly complex case MDT and early adoption of osteoanabolic therapy as first-line treatment. Its expansion to all fragility and low-impact fractures, including vertebral fractures identified opportunistically on imaging, was recognised as demonstrating genuine clinical ambition and national leadership.

A particular innovation is the bespoke Vertebral Fracture Identification (VXP) code, developed with radiology and metabolic bone medicine, creating a robust referral pathway from emergency and acute medicine.
