Bone health takes center stage at the Mexican Congress of Orthopedics 2025
The LXX National Congress of Orthopedics, organized by the Mexican College of Orthopedics and Traumatology (CMO) from April 30th to May 4th, 2025 in Guadalajara, Mexico, included in its scientific programme a topic of growing importance in clinical practice: bone fragility and fracture prevention.
One of the outstanding lectures was that of Dr. Patricia Clark, a renowned Mexican epidemiologist and member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Board of Governance, who was invited as a special speaker at the congress. Her presentation, entitled "The Impact of Bone Fragility Worldwide", offered a global look at the burden of fragility fractures, the persistent challenges in secondary prevention, and the need for urgent action in the face of population aging.
During her presentation, Dr. Clark also presented IOF’s work, its global mission, and the initiatives it develops in Latin America to improve bone health and reduce fragility fractures. She explained how IOF programmes such as Capture the Fracture® have proven to be effective models in the implementation of Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), which enable the identification, treatment, and follow-up of patients who have already suffered a fracture, thus avoiding new injuries and their consequences.
"Collaboration between international organizations such as IOF and national medical societies is critical to advancing effective prevention strategies," said Dr. Clark.
The inclusion of this topic in the most important orthopedic congress in Mexico represents a significant step towards greater awareness of the silent epidemic of fractures and the urgency of adopting coordinated and sustainable solutions in the Mexican health system.
IOF celebrates the fact that these scientific spaces open the door to dialogue on secondary fracture prevention and reaffirms its commitment to working together with professionals in Mexico to build more efficient and patient-centered care systems.
