Focus on Fracture Liaison Services at the virtual WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2021

FLS at virtual WCO-IOF-ESCEO Congress

The world’s largest clinical event in the field of osteoporosis and musculoskeletal diseases, the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2021), is a unique educational opportunity – a leading forum in which to share advances and clinical best practice in the bone and muscle field. The IOF Capture the Fracture® initiative is very pleased to announce that this year’s scientific program will include a special focus on post-fracture care coordination (PFC) services, often known as fracture liaison services, or FLS.

We invite you to register for the Congress and to plan your attendance at the informative sessions which underline the critical importance of PFC/FLS to secondary fracture prevention worldwide.

Honorary Lecture

  • Where are the cracks? Understanding the needs in fragility fracture management (live, Thursday Aug. 26, 16.50, channel 1)

Presented by Professor Kassim Javaid, NIHR Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

Meet the Expert sessions

  • Fracture liaison services (FLS) and fracture risk reduction (live, Saturday Aug. 28, 12:00, channel 1)

Kassim Javaid, Professor at the NIHR Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK and Co-Chair of the Capture the Fracture® Steering Committee, will lead this informative session. He will provide insights into the key components of an effective FLS, in which the patient pathway must include identification, investigation, treatment recommendation, and monitoring to ensure early initiation of treatment and longer-term adherence. He will also discuss the challenge of ensuring that a local FLS is sufficiently funded to benefit patients, and present a new FLS benefit and budget impact model which can be applied at the national, regional or local hospital level to inform policy decision-making and plan services.

  • Lyosis® Software - A new way to manage FLS centers more efficiently and cost optimized (live, Saturday August 28, 10:00 am CET - channel 2)

Werner Fehn, CEO of BoneMonitor will present the detailed components of this new online software, which is available globally. Lyosis® will help FLS centers to more effectively track and monitor patients, for improved outcomes and optimized management of the FLS center.

Symposia

  • ESCEO-IOF-SICOT joint Symposium: Fracture Liaison Services in Orthopaedic Surgery (pre-recorded session)

This joint symposium, with expert speakers Josée Delisle, Julio Fernandes and Kassim Javaid, will reflect on the successful collaboration between orthopaedics and FLS globally, provide guidance on how orthopaedic surgeons can contribute to an FLS, discuss steps to getting FLSs sustainable, and share insights on how to create synergy between nurses, doctors, patients and their families in the FLS setting.

  • Non Sponsored Symposium: Fracture Liaison Services in Latin America: From Where and Where To (pre-recorded session)

In this symposium, leading regional FLS experts will provide insights into the status of coordinated post-fracture care programs in Latin America. The following topics will be discussed: overview of FLSs in Latin America (speaker Bruno Muzzi Camargos), the situation of FLSs in Mexico (speaker Andrea Olascoaga Gómez de León), how FLSs have impacted post-fracture outcomes in Colombia (speaker Adriana Medina Orjuela) and the landscape of FLSs in public and private systems in Brazil (speaker Bernardo Stolnicki).

Educational lecture

  • Integrated Care Pathways for Bone Health: improving care around the world (live, Saturday Aug 28, 1.10 pm CET, Channel 2)

In this educational lecture, Dr Mary Bussell will discuss the need for coordination across all stakeholder groups as a means to decrease the health and socioeconomic burden of poor bone health. Among the topics discussed will be the need to close the secondary fracture prevention gap, which has been highlighted as a priority for policymakers globally - to not only improve population health but to provide cost savings to health systems. The educational Lecture is sponsored by ESCEO through an unrestricted educational grant from Amgen.

Oral presentations

  • Quality of life, resource use, and cost related to fragility fractures: development and evaluation of multidisciplinary post-fracture care pathways. (OC23)  Presenting author: ‣ J. Talevski Authors: K. Sanders, J. Watts, L. Busija, A. Beauchamp, G. Duque, F. Borgström, J. A. Kanis,  A. Svedbom, A. Stuart, S. Brennan Olsen  (live, Saturday Aug. 28, 12:30 CET – channel 1)

Presenting author Jason Talevski (University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia), will discuss the findings of a new study which sought to identify multidisciplinary care pathways for individual fracture sites (hip, vertebrae, wrist, humerus) and to determine the costs and impact of these care pathways on health-related quality of life. The study aims to assist health care providers worldwide in allocating resources for fractures in more cost-effective ways.

  • Post-fracture care program start offsetting initial investment two years after their implementation: preliminary findings from a microsimulation model of benefit and budget impact. (OP23 - P726) R. Pinedo-Villanueva, E. Burn, C. Cooper, M. K. Javaid, Capture the Fracture® Partnership Study Group (Pre-recorded)

Speaker R. Pinedo-Villanueva (University of Oxford, Oxford, UK) will discuss the preliminary findings of a microsimulation model to analyze the yearly incremental costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) of a post-fracture care (PFC) program implementation in comparison to current practice in various countries.

If you have an interest in post-fracture care coordination program development, be sure to register and join us at the WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2021. The entire CME-accredited program can be viewed by registrants for a period of 3 months after the congress – a great opportunity to watch the sessions at your leisure!

About Capture the Fracture®

Capture the Fracture® (CTF) is a multi-stakeholder initiative led by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). The initiative hopes to drive changes at local and international levels, so that secondary fracture prevention becomes a reality. Its aim is to set global best practices for Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), while serving as a benchmark tool to which clinics and hospitals can adhere and aspire to, and receive international recognition. The CTF program has a diverse set of tools that provides essential resources and documentation to drive quality improvement in FLS; CTF also offers mentorship programs that support development of FLS at the local level. Currently the CTF network includes 652 FLS in 49 countries worldwide.
