The Mentorship Program is one of the pillars of IOF's Capture the Fracture® initiative.

The Capture the Fracture® Mentorship Program seeks to support Post-Fracture Care Coordination (PFC) Programs, commonly known as Fracture Liaison Services (FLS). It aims to drive an increase in the number and quality of PFC Programs/FLS and ensure that they are sustainable in the long term. The "Train the Trainer" component provides specific, intensive training and certification to selected national experts. Upon completion of the training, a pool of mentors is formed to support local PFC Program/FLS development.

PFC Programs/FLS are designed to:

  • Close the care gap for fracture patients, 80% of whom never receive screening and/or treatment for osteoporosis.
  • Improve communication among health care providers by establishing a care pathway for the treatment of patients with fragility fractures

Currently, there are a total of 11 mentors from 3 countries in our region: Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

The CTF mentors provide advice and share their experience with all those interested in implementing or improving an existing PFC Programs/FLS. Since the implementation of the Mentorship Program in Latin America, the mentors have supported the creation of 25 new PFC Programs/FLS in their countries of origin.

In this context, the 1st Regional Meeting of Capture the Fracture® Mentors in Latin America was held on May 20. The virtual meeting was designed with the idea of continuing the development of the Latin American Mentors’ skills and knowledge through the exchange of best practices. In addition, the Regional Meeting included a joint exercise to identify common opportunities, challenges and needs that are specific to PFC Programs/FLS working in each of their countries. The premise of this first meeting was a brainstorming session on the challenges and opportunities faced by PFC Programs/FLS in restarting or sustaining their activities in the context of the pandemic.

Throughout the session, the mentors shared their experiences by answering three questions: what were the main challenges encountered, what actions were taken, and which were effective? The outcome of this exercise will be presented in an upcoming education and exchange initiative for the PFC Program/FLS community in Latin America in June. Follow IOF LATAM on Facebook and Twitter for daily updates.

Now more than ever is the time to work with and support all those willing to implement or improve their PFC Program/FLS to prioritize secondary fracture prevention.  If you want to know more about the mentorship program in Latin America, contact Monica Caló, IOF LATAM manager monica.calo@osteoporosis.foundation

The meetings are scheduled to be held quarterly and each one will be led by a different group of mentors in charge of presenting the topic on which the meeting will focus.
