Chi-Mei Hospital, Liouying

Chi-Mei hospital, Liouying, is a regional hospital with more than 800 wards and is also certificated as an age-friendly hospital. We built an FLS team in August 2019 and started the FLS program in Jan 2020 after being approved by Institutional Review Boards. We provide a hip and spine-based FLS program. Our FLS team includes a full-time coordinator, pharmacist, orthopedist, neurosurgeon, rheumatologist, endocrinologist, family physician, oncologist, and dentist. We join together and have a weekly meeting to provide collaborative care. Over 300 hip fracture patients are enrolled in this program each year.

With our efforts on FLS, we have already increased the rates of post-injury assessment for bone mineral density from 38.8% to 87%, osteoporosis treatment rates from 35.5% to 78.4%. The post-fracture one-year mortality rate was also decreased from 10.53% to 7.54% in our geriatric hip fracture patients. Besides, in-hospital days decreased from 9.78 days to 8.0 days, 30 days readmission rate decreased from 10.53% to 9.52%, surgical-related complication rates (hip dislocation, implant loosening, or infection) decreased from 8.3% to 6.1%.
